WELCOME TO MR. ANDREWS' LANGUAGE ARTS
Welcome to a new school year. I am proud to be the 7/8 Language Arts teacher at ISAAC and look forward to getting to know you and your students better over the next year. I would like to give you some information on myself so that you and your student can get to know me better. I graduated from Eastern Connecticut State University in 1987 and received a B.A. in English. I worked in law enforcement and criminal justice for several years as well as being a Social Worker in the Department of Children and Families before becoming involved in education. I received a Masters of Art in Teaching from Sacred Heart University in 2001 and worked as a Crisis Intervention Coordinator and also a high school English teacher in area schools before coming to ISAAC.

Below is some information about how class will work this year. This years expedition is Human Interaction with Nature.
I wanted to let you know some basic information about Language Arts so that you know how to communicate with me, my expectations and where to go for information that will help your child be successful.
Whatís the best way to reach you?
The easiest way to reach me is email at ernie_andrews@isaacschool.org. If you prefer to telephone, call 860-447-1003, and leave a number where you can be reached.
How much homework do you give?
Thirty (30) minutes of reading homework are assigned 5 days a week. Your child is required to complete a homework reading log each week. These logs are handed out the beginning of each week and due the beginning of the following week. Occasionally, there will be other homework depending on what we are studying in class.
Daily homework is posted on the whiteboard and discussed in class so that students can write it in their Agendas.
My goal is that students will become excellent writers and readers, as well as more organized and effective students. They will practice writing throughout the year and will read, discuss and write about novels, short stories and non-fiction articles.
What about due dates and late work?
Learning to meet deadlines is an important life skill, which is why homework is due on its due date at the start of class. Extensions are granted for illness and family emergencies. Homework is assigned to provide practice in important skills and to demonstrate progress made in acquiring skills. That is why even if homework is late, students are still expected to complete it.
What are your requirements for written work?
Final copies of written work must be typed. We will be doing most of the typing in class, but if students fall behind then they will be required to type it at home or after school.
If you have a printer problem, your child may email the work to me at ernie_andrews@isaacschool.org, save it on a flash drive and print it at school, or neatly handwrite the work. These options mean your child can always be successful.
On occasion, students are tempted to copy work from other students or the Internet: plagiarism. Whenever a student uses words that the student has not written him/herself, the student receives a zero and is required to do the work over. When a student allows another student to copy his/her work, both students receive a zero for the assignment.
How do you grade?
Grades are based on homework, class work (including positive participation in discussions and activities), preparation for class, and tests.
Required Materials to Bring to Class Daily
- Agenda
- Composition Notebook
- Spiral Notebook
- A book to read
- Pens and pencils
I look forward to working with you and your child to develop your childís reading, writing, study and personal organization skills. If you ever have questions or concerns, please let me know.
